The VSK-94 sniper rifle («Voyskoy Snipersky Kompleks» Military Sniper Complex, GRAU Index - 6V8) has an intriguing history. It was born out of the need to create a cheaper, more compact and versatile sniper rifle for Russian special law enforcement units. It was developed by experienced designers of the Tula KBP Instrument Design Bureau.

The rifle was based on the 9A-91 assault rifle, which in turn was a simplified and cheaper alternative to the AS "Val" and SR-3M "Vikhr". The VSK-94 was an alternative to the VSS "Vintorez" rifle.

The VSK-94 is designed primarily for special forces and law enforcement agencies. It is well suited for urban environments, where compactness and maneuverability play a key role.

The rifle is gas operated, rotary bolt action. The rifle is trigger-operated. Detachable silencer, automatic and single shot modes. This design provides stable operation in a wide range of conditions.

The rifle uses subsonic bullet velocity and increased mass: sniper SP-5, armor-piercing SP-6, as well as new PAB-9 cartridge, which combines good accuracy with armor-piercing effect and has lower cost, and is designed specifically for police units, to ensure relatively mass use of this type of weapon.

Tactical and technical characteristics

The VSK-94 9x39mm rifle has a standard 20 round magazine. The maximum range is about 400 meters, which is quite sufficient for its purpose, but certainly not enough by the standards of standard sniper rifles.

Overall length of 932 mm and weight of 2.8 kg (without sight and ammunition) make the rifle suitable for use in various tactical situations.

Compact and modular design: One of the defining features of the VSK-94 is its compact design. The rifle is designed to be maneuverable and easy to handle, which is especially important in urban warfare and close combat situations. At the same time, the compactness of the rifle is achieved without compromising its accuracy and stability, which is very important for a sniper rifle.

Polymer buttstock: equipped with a polymer buttstock, which serves several purposes at once. First, it reduces the overall weight of the rifle, making it easier to carry and handle. Second, the polymer material provides durability and resistance to various external influences, ensuring the durability and reliability of the rifle in various operating scenarios.

Detachable silencer: the distinctive feature of the VSK-94 from the same VSS "Vintorez" is the presence of a detachable silencer, with the ability to fire without it. This design is aimed at reducing noise and muzzle flash, while retaining the ability to be used in confined spaces.

The rifle is gas operated, rotary bolt action. This system is known for its reliability and smooth operation, which contributes to improved accuracy and stability. It also helps to reduce recoil, which is important for maintaining accuracy in subsequent shots.

Specialized ammunition is available in 9x39mm caliber: The rifle is chambered for the 9x39mm cartridge, a subsonic round that combines well with a silencer. The bullets in this cartridge are heavier than standard rifle cartridges, which provides greater stopping power and effectiveness, especially at the ranges for which the VSK-94 is designed.

Sighting systems: equipped with a rail system that allows mounting a variety of telescopic sights and sighting aids. This flexibility of sights allows the sniper to adapt the rifle to different requirements, from short to medium ranges. The standard scope is the PSO-1-1, but other types of sights can be mounted on the rifle.

Ergonomic design: attention to ergonomics is evident. Controls layout, stock shape and overall balance of the rifle are designed to ensure comfort and efficiency of the user. This ergonomics helps to reduce shooter's fatigue and improve accuracy over long periods of time. However, there are no adjustments to the stock, trigger guard, or bipods.

Magazine and feeding system: The rifle uses a detachable box magazine with a capacity of 20 rounds. The magazine is designed for smooth feeding of cartridges into the chamber, which is very important for sniper rifle, where every shot is important.

Barrel design: The rifle barrel is characterized by high accuracy. Barrel length of 230 mm allows to balance maneuverability and accuracy.

Performance Analysis

The rifle's characteristics are a balance of strengths and weaknesses. The rifle has proven itself in urban and close-quarters combat, where its compact design and ability to be deployed quickly are invaluable.

However, when it comes to long-range combat, it is not the best choice. It is a tool built for specific use scenarios.

It is also worth taking into account that the rifle was designed precisely as a cheapened version of a special weapon.

In general, the VSK-94 sniper rifle is a harmonious combination of compactness, concealability, reliability and tactical flexibility. Each design element serves a specific purpose, contributing to the overall effectiveness of the rifle as a specialized tool for military and law enforcement snipers.

Advantages and disadvantages

The rifle has sufficient firing power due to the high bullet weight. The bullet has excellent penetration and stopping power. For special operations, especially in open terrain, the aiming and effective range of this rifle is very impressive.

The comfortable buttstock combined with the customizable telescopic sight provides high accuracy. It is also important to note that the absence of muzzle flame and sound suppression of the shot allow the sniper to remain invisible even at close range from the enemy.

The heavy bullet loses energy slowly, maintaining high efficiency even at distances exceeding the maximum sighting range. Due to the small size of the rifle, the shooter can effectively utilize different cover.

On the other hand, the VSK-94 has some disadvantages. The large bullet weight and increased powder load result in significant recoil, which can be problematic due to the relatively light weight of the rifle itself.

Although the rifle has improved noise reduction characteristics, it is not completely silent, especially noticeable when firing in bursts, when the bolt makes a loud noise.

When using the automatic firing mode, the effectiveness of the silencer is reduced. Also, significant weight of ammunition reduces the total amount of ammunition that can be carried by the shooter. The subsonic bullet trajectory limits the effective range of fire.

The VSK-94 design features include a trigger-operated percussion mechanism, which distinguishes it from the VSS "Vintorez". Due to its non-disassembled design, the rifle's silencer requires special maintenance, including flushing after firing, and is susceptible to corrosion when in contact with water.

Absence of chrome plating on the barrel improves accuracy due to more uniform pattern, but reduces the overall life of the rifle. Despite these nuances, the VSK-94 proved its effectiveness and reliability during the two Chechen wars.

Usage

The rifle has been adopted by various military and law enforcement units, especially in countries that support Russian military hardware - in addition to Russia, these are Belarus, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Uzbekistan. The rifle is actively used by special units in counter-terrorist operations.
